PROBLEM:
A semi-truck leaked approximately 55 gallons of diesel fuel onto the street and soil.
A semi-truck leaked approximately 55-gallons of diesel fuel onto the street and into the adjacent soil. HazChem crew was tasked with the remediation of the diesel impacted soil.
SOLUTION:
Soil Remediation: HazChem responded quickly to have the soil dug out while we took soil samples to ensure all diesel impacted areas were remediated.
Crew arrived onsite and there was standing water in the excavation area. We subcontracted RW Collins to dig out the soil while we took soil samples to ensure all diesel imacted areas were remediated.
To prevent the standing water from entering the excavation zone, a soil berm was crafted by the excavator.
Diesel impacted soil was continued to be removed down the ditch line.
Excavation soil samples were taken for photoionization detection (PID) sampling.
Once an area was determined, by PID sampling, to be cleared, a soil sample would be taken and sent to a lab for analysis. This analysis would determine if the soil has been remediated to Illinois Tiered Approach to Corrective Actions (TACO) Standards.
Total soil samples taken.
After the excavation had been determined to be cleared, and final samples have been taken, the excavator operator backfill the excavation with clean soil and back to original grade.
IDOT approved grass seed mixture was then spread onto the clean soil.
An excelsior blanket was then laid over the seed to complete the remediation and restoration project.
