Warehouse Spill leads to Hazardous Chemical Remediation
HazChem received a call regarding a spill involving a 50 lb bag of lithium hydroxide powder that had been ripped during shipping. They needed immediate hazardous chemical spill remediation. In response, our Emergency Rapid Response Team was quickly assembled, and was deployed within 60 minutes to the site in our Emergency Rapid Response truck. Lithium hydroxide is a hazardous chemical due to its highly corrosive nature, capable of causing severe skin burns and eye damage if contacted. Inhalation or ingestion can also be toxic.
Upon arrival at the site, the Team conducted a health and safety meeting. They then donned Level “C” Tyvek suits and air-purifying respirators to safely handle the UN2680 lithium hydroxide. Once the spill’s origin was identified, the Team unwrapped and unstacked the pallet to access the damaged bag.
The Team located one damaged bag of product and placed it into an open-top 55-gallon poly drum for disposal as waste.
They then used a HEPA vacuum to thoroughly clean the spilled product from the freight and the floor.
After completing the remediation, the Team doffed their PPE and placed the used gear into a separate 55-gallon open-top poly drum for disposal as waste.
The spill generated two 55-gallon drums of waste, which were sealed, properly labeled, and left on-site. Final photos were taken, and the remediation was approved.
