What To Do After an Industrial Paint Spill

HazChem Environmental specializes in both hazardous and non-hazardous spill cleanup response.  HazChem Environmental recently responded to a paint spill caused by a pallet being crushed due to double stacking. Approximately 6 gallons of paint were released, contaminating both the pallet and the trailer floor. People often ask how to clean spilled paint. Calling HazChem Environmental to clean up a paint spill is the best option for several reasons:

1. Proper Disposal & Environmental Safety

    • Oil-based paints and some latex paints contain hazardous chemicals that require proper disposal to prevent environmental damage.
    • Professionals follow local regulations for hazardous waste disposal, ensuring no fines or legal issues.

2. Avoids Permanent Staining & Damage

    • Paint can soak into porous surfaces (like carpets, wood, or concrete) if not cleaned up properly.
    • DIY cleanup attempts with the wrong methods may spread the stain or cause surface damage.

3. Specialized Equipment & Techniques

    • Professionals use industrial-grade solvents, absorbents, and pressure-washing tools to remove paint effectively.
    • They can determine the right cleaning agents to avoid damaging the affected surface.

4. Faster & More Effective Cleanup

    • A professional team can remove paint quickly and efficiently, minimizing downtime for businesses.
    • This is especially important for large spills or commercial settings where time is crucial.

5. Health & Safety Concerns

    • Many paints release toxic fumes (especially oil-based ones) that require proper ventilation.
    • Professionals wear protective gear and use the right techniques to minimize health risks.

6. Prevents Liability Issues

    • In business or industrial settings, an improper cleanup could lead to slip hazards or regulatory fines.
    • Hiring professionals ensures compliance with safety regulations.

The damaged containers were placed into a poly-lined 55-gallon OTS drum for disposal. The non-damaged containers were restacked and rewrapped on a cleaned pallet, making it suitable for shipment.

To address the spill, the crew applied oil dry to absorb the liquid waste, using brooms, shovels, and scrapers. The saturated oil dry was then collected and placed into the designated waste drum.
