HAZMAT PROBLEM:
A substantial hydrochloric acid spill occurred in a warehouse when a forklift inadvertently punctured a pallet.
A hydrochloric (HCl) acid spill can be highly hazardous and poses severe risks to health, safety, and the environment. Our specialized Team was called for the acid spill clean up.
SOLUTION:
HazChem’s Emergency Rapid Response Team received the warehouse call, and was en route within less than 60 minutes. Once on-scene, they donned Level “C” Tyvek suits with air purifying respirators to work with the UN1789 acid. The impacted 4 foot x 5 foot area was immediately secured and isolated for cleanup and remediation.
The affected area, along with the pallet and forklift, was wrapped with caution tape. Nearby freight was relocated away from the spill.
The Team used pH paper to verify the acidity of the spilled substance, which registered at a pH level of 1.
The contaminated forklift and pallet were removed from the area to begin the acid spill clean up.
A solution of sodium bicarbonate and water was applied to the affected freight and surrounding area to neutralize the acidity of the spill. Absorbent pads were then used to clean the remaining acid from the forklift and pallet.
The Team retested the area with a pH strip to ensure the acid had been neutralized. The pH test confirmed a neutral reading.
Oil-Dry was applied to absorb the remaining sodium bicarbonate and water solution. The saturated material was then collected and placed into a 55-gallon drum.
Contaminated PPE and absorbent pads were placed into an additional 55-gallon drum for disposal. The spill generated two waste drums that were properly labelled, sealed, and kept on-site. Photos were sent and remediation of the spill was approved.
