PROBLEM:
A tote carrying acidic liquid broke and spilled during shipping. The spill released 210 gallons of product from the damaged tote and contaminated the freight inside the trailer, as well as the pavement area.
SOLUTION:
HazChem deployed a Response Team within 60 minutes of receiving the call for Emergency Liquid Spill Response.
Upon arrival at the scene, the crew assessed the situation and held a brief health and safety meeting. They donned level “C” Tyvek suits with air purifying respirators, latex boot covers, and nitrile chem master gloves while working with the UN1789 acidic liquid.
To contain the spread of the release, the crew deployed oil-dry around the lot outside of the trailer and the storm drains.
A mixture of sodium bicarbonate and water was used to neutralize the spilled acidic liquid. The trailer was offloaded, and the contaminated freight was wiped down with the sodium bicarbonate solution.
The crew brought a new 330-gallon poly tote to transfer the contents of the damaged tote to the new one. The tote transfer was a success.
The contaminated oil-dry from inside and outside the trailer was collected and placed into a 55-gallon open top steel drum.
Sodium bicarbonate was spread around the imacted area.
The impacted area and was flushed with water to neutralize.
A DOT truck arrived on-site to load the waste drums and the empty damaged tote onto their truck. The crew cleaned the remaining area and took their final photos of the remediation.
