Nitric Acid Spill: Hazardous Material Incident

The vapor is very irritating to the eyes, throat, lungs, and corrosive to the teeth. If the vapor is inhaled in significant amounts it will result in severe coughing, chest pain and shortness of breath. Contact with the skin will result in a severe corrosive burn. HazChem technicians used the appropriate PPE equipment to remediate the spill. The crew deployed oil dry inside of the trailer for containment and absorption.
We collected the impacted oil dry and remediated the affected areas before moving the trailer into the dock. The impacted oil dry was scooped up and put into a 55-gallon OTP drum, to be disposed of as waste.

HazChem technicians created a mixture of water and sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the affected areas. They then offloaded the freight from within the trailer, wiping the pallets off with universal pads and the mixture.
The HazChem team attached a tote transfer kit to both totes, allowing the contents to gravity feed through to the new container.
The crew completed the remediation, doffed their PPE and put them into a designated drum to be disposed of as waste. The spill generated three waste drums; sealed, properly labeled, and kept on-site with the emptied tote. Final photos were taken, and remediation was approved.
