Pigment Spill During Transport
HazChem Environmental recently responded to a red pigment spill when a pallet was crushed during shipping. Pigments can be difficult to clean up due to their ability to stain surfaces and spread easily. Specialized cleanup procedures and equipment may be required to safely manage spills. Even with non-hazardous spills, PPE is often used. Professional spill clean up is just a phone call away and we are open 24/7/365 to respond.
Depending on the type and quantity of pigment spilled, regulatory requirements for cleanup, reporting, and disposal must be followed to prevent legal consequences and environmental fines. Some pigments pose several dangers, depending on the type of pigment and its chemical composition.
HazChem Environmental specializes in both hazardous and non-hazardous spill cleanup response. The crew donned Tyvek suits, dust masks, Nitrile gloves to work with red pigment. The crew located the spill scene and found one damaged 25-pound bag inside of an affected box that had been released on the trailer floor and walls.
HazChem Environmental technicians staged one 55-gallon OTP drum with a poly liner drum, for waste.
Using absorbent pads, our crew wiped down the affected product boxes that were non-damaged, so they could put them onto a new pallet.
HazChem crew used absorbent pads and a mixture of sodium hydroxide and water to rid the walls and the floor of the trailer of the red pigment.
They overpacked the damaged product box into the designated drum, to be disposed of as waste, along with the supplies used, and their PPE.
This spill generated one waste drum; sealed, properly labeled, and kept on-site. Final photos were taken and remediation was approved.
